Star Wars: Datapad

One of the core design goals of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge was that the land itself is an attraction. Core to that idea is the Star Wars: Datapad. It is the tool that allows Guests to not only explore the land in ways like never before but to interact with it in new ways as well. Using their mobile device Guests can explore the land, take on jobs for various factions, and build a reputation with the outpost residents by playing mini-games and located physical objects in the land. This experience is the first of its kind for theme parks.

As Lead Designer on this project, my responsibilities were to develop the design, pitch it to executives and park leadership, and work with a vendor to execute the design. Along the way, I had the amazing opportunity to work with the team developing the overall outpost to coordinate hardware infrastructure, lighting and audio feedback cues, and animation of audio-animatronic figures. All of this led to a one of a kind experience for Guests who visit Galaxy’s Edge. Since its opening, a community of passionate players has developed and play regularly, driving Guest to Guest as well as Guest to Cast engagement in the park.

Once you activate the Star Wars: Datapad, you’ll find many tools at your disposal for exploring the planet Batuu:

  • Translate a variety of languages from across the galaxy—including Aurebesh signs throughout Black Spire Outpost.

  • Scan objects all around the spaceport to discover precious cargo.

  • Tune and decrypt communications sent by the planet’s many residents.

  • Use the Star Wars: Datapad to hack into—and interact with—select devices, control panels and droids.

Take on Jobs to Help Outpost Residents

As you hack, scan, translate and tune through Black Spire Outpost, you’ll have the chance to complete jobs for its many residents and off-worlders alike! With each job you complete, you’ll collect digital rewards in return—like ship schematics, star maps, galactic credits and more.
